Keeping Your Bathroom Sparkling With Little Effort

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Your bathroom is a hard-working part of your home. It sees a lot of traffic all day and this can lead to a messy, dingy bathroom. As well, moisture and dampness in the bathroom can easily lead to mould, mildew, and other problems. Steam can cause streaks and buildup on mirrors and taps. Yet, most of us are really busy and just don’t have the time to constantly be scrubbing the bathroom. Luckily, there are several solutions to keep your bathroom tidy with minimal fuss:

1) Use a calendar. Get everyone in your household involved in cleaning. Divide the bathroom chores by day – everyone has to select a day when they are responsible for cleaning the bathroom. Mark down on a calendar who is responsible for the bathroom on what days and stick to the schedule.

2) Use products that save you time. I have a friend who is has a hectic job, a busy family life and is working her way through the US immigration process. Since she spends hours on her job, her family, and USCIS forms for green card replacement and other services, she relies on products that save her time. One of her favorites? An after-shower spray that takes care of grime in the bathtub and shower. After showering, you simply spray the product in your shower and it reduces the amount of time you need to spend scrubbing that tub or shower.

3) Use waiting time to tidy up. While brushing your teeth with one hand, you could clear a counter or fold a towel with the other. While waiting for a face mask to set, you could clean out the medicine closet.

4) Clean as you go. One of the easiest ways to keep your bathroom tidy is to take an extra minute to straighten up the bathroom each time you visit it.

5) Keep your bathroom well-ventilated. Using a fan or opening a window ensures that moisture and steam don’t get trapped in the bathroom. Good ventilation prevents mold, mildew, buildup, and other hard-to-clean problems.

6) Take care of bathroom odors with no extra work. Set out a box of scented bath products, scented soaps, or potpourri in your bathroom to create a nice scent at all times. There are even plug-in fresheners or inserts you can add to your vent to add some fragrance in the bathroom.

7) Use a timer. We often put off cleaning the bathroom because it seems like such a big, daunting task. However, if you set a timer for five or ten minutes a day and tackle the cleaning for just those few minutes, you’ll be astonished at how tidy your bathroom gets (and stays).
